2015-09-03 17.29.23Yea, it’s true – can you believe it, I did a guest appearance in Hawaii Five-0 on November 6th!  Kind of a funny story though – I almost didn’t even got to the audition.

I had gone out on auditions a few times for 5-0 and never got a call back.  Thinking that I really suck at this acting I should just scratch it off my bucket list, but I didn’t and then this happened.

So on this one day I get a text from agent Ryan Brown from ADR Hawaii and he says Rachel from Ohana Casting wanted to see me for a part.  I really didn’t get excited – I got bummed, as if it was going to cut into my surfing.  You see, the last time I got called in for 5-0 was to play a dead guy and I didn’t even get that part so I thought for sure my acting was “dead” in it’s tracks.

So I wasn’t even going to go to the audition even though it was a couple blocks from my house – figuring I can’t even play a dead guy, WTF!  But it was my daughter Monique that pressed me.  I was all tired, dirty from a morning surf and afternoon backyard cleaning session and I didn’t feel like getting rejected, again.

Quick backstory; I never acted or tried to be an actor though I spend much time around the industry.  Couple years ago I

bumped into Ryan at a family function and he said “ah try it man, ya never know”.  Stalling for about a year, my friend Keo finally took a couple of pics and I sent them in………..then crickets :} Then last year some calls came in – had fun reading for local spots but to no avail.  Then a few calls for Hawaii Five-0 came in and here we are…..so……anyhow……

So Monique and my granddaughter grinded me down and I just went to the audition – all “bussup” as we say here in Hawaii – hair mushed, no shave, ripped pants and salt in my eyebrows from surfing – just got in my car with my “sides” (LOL – one line).

Get there, walk through the casting door and there’s half a dozen guys looking way cool and ready to rock – I walked in all “buss”and they way they looked at me  I though one of the guys was going to show where the trash was to take out 😐 So I go in (got called in first) and read my ONE line a couple times and Aloha – I’m out.

So, the next day and I get another text – they want to see me again – cool, my first call back ever 🙂  This time I showered and went – LOL.  Again, walk in and there’s  few other guys reading for the part too……..::::sigh::::……feeling deflated.

I go in and the director was holding the casting this time – real serious and I could tell no time for messing around.  ZERO emotion on her face and she runs me through the ONE-LINE twice and says next – Rachel looks at me and smiles as I walk away the rest of the guys are pumped for their turn.  Head down I walk back to my car and laugh and say to myself “this is just not for me” – WRONG!

Two hours later I got the cal and here I am – my first part ever at the age of 54. Fast lane to a fast game – filled out a ton of paperwork, did a fitting and the cool expereince gets underway!  Next day is the shoot….

Fast forward: I play Kai Frontera, the guy that gets held hostage until my kid throws the game.  I got ruffed up pretty good in my scene.  Dinged my elbow pretty good but stunt guys were pro and lent me pads – super Mahalo guys!  Four hours later I was back home grabbing my board for a surf.

No illusions of doing this for a living but one thing is for sure, acting is not easy and you need a thick skin for rejection.  I’m stoked I got to be on 5-0 but my respect for the acting gig from soup to nuts is huge now…..

I had a great time – cast and crew were epic to me.  From Rachel and Ohana Casting to Pomai and Rayn at ADR – THANK YOU SO MUCH :)))))

And now I think I’m going to crawl back into my studio and just write music for TV/Film and leave the acting for the actors – unless of course……….

TaaaaaDaaaaa – introducing for the first (and probably last) time –  Abba Geebz (GiBi del Barrio) as Kai Frontera 😀
